High-brow issues

Here’s an issue I simply cannot get my eyes off when I’m scanning the MRT carriages during rush hour.

Did you know that your eyebrow is supposed to start directly above the inner corner of your eye? The highest point should be just a little beyond the outer corner of the iris and should taper off to the end!

Here’s another nice illustration from Paula’s Choice, which states that “the shape of the eyebrow is correct when the beginning of the brow is aligned with the center of the nostril and the arch falls over the back third of the eye.”

It’s amazing how simple the description of a good eyebrow shape is, but how many women (and some fey men) mess it up when they try to reshape their eyebrows.

Here are some that I can’t stand (when they’re shaped deliberately this way), and I’ve recreated them from memory.

The White Queen Stab

In the effort to look striking, the eyebrows are cut too fiercely and the woman looks damned angry all the time. It looks much better in comics than real life. Modesty Blaise used to have this shape but most Asians can’t carry her uber-feminist look.

The Transvestite Arch

The favourite of many local girls, the procedure is to first shave off most of their brows, then draw in a brownish arch that is thin, too acute in angle and overall rather sickly-looking. Excuse me, the high arches belong to McDonalds’, not your forehead. For some reason, the transvestites seem to like this look.

The Lacking Brow

Let’s face it, not everyone has lovely thick brows. In this example, the woman tries to shape her brows like the perfect brow should look, but forgets that she doesn’t actually have enough hair towards the tapered end to get it right. It can also be due to drawing the front part too thickly, but not getting the rear portion right.

The Alamak Look

‘Nuff said.

If you can’t get it right, leave it alone.

Got other ugly brow-shapes you can’t stand? Tell me in the comments section and I’ll see if I can recreate them!!

  1. Ooh… i must add this. The point where the “perfect brow” ends. You should be able to draw a straight line from the outtermost corner of your nose, to the outtermost point of your eye, and extend that line to where the brow should end. Try to picture lah… hard to put down in words. Haha.

  2. I have the “White Queen Stab” eyebrows, Naturally! I can’t stand it, i do everything I can to make them look lower, I always seem cross unless i smile. 🙁
