Should your child go for music lessons?

I had a very interesting experience at Mandeville today. Our annual ABRSM violin exams are about a month away, and this is the month where there are all sorts of “technique” or “masterclass” sessions for the students to attend.

Detour: I personally feel that the technique classes are not really necessary (they cost extra and are mandatory for all exam-takers) [....]

Hong Kong and my milestones in life

Hong Kong, view from Victoria’s Peak, 830am, 14 Jul 2010. The clouds played nice as the sun beat down mercilessly, and I decided BnW was the best way to go for this image.

Hong Kong will always have a special place in my heart, because every time I visit this chaotic city, it has been for significant milestone events in [....]

On being mono-skilled

I had an interesting online conversation with a journo today who’s thinking of finding a new job but believes he is “mono-skilled”. That causes him to believe that it’s hard for him to write his CV, or find interested recruiters.

Thankfully, that’s not true at all, even as many journos continue to subscribe to that belief. Those who don’t, have [....]

Axioms Feb 2010

Several axioms I’ve learnt and committed to memory in recent days.

Mediocrity begins with a closed mind. People who refuse to step into the shoes of others are doomed to live their lives out with a narrow perspective. Sounds like common sense, but you’d be surprised how many people refuse to take off their rose-tinted glasses.

A humbling quote

I was reading TIME magazine’s profile on Robert Gates when this paragraph and its last quote just jumped out at me.

The public saw only the poker face. " ‘Never let them see you sweat’ — you can put that above Gates’ door," says Richard Armitage, an old friend and colleague. Four years later, while serving as Deputy National Security Adviser [....]

SingPost fiasco : Where was the creativity?

Update 11 Jan 2010:

Real artists painting over the “vandalized” postboxes. Picture from ST.

Looks like SingPost did a nice turnaround by getting real (ie. talented) artists to paint over the “vandalized” postboxes (actually I should remove the apostrophes as I do consider the postboxes vandalized).

From what the press says, this repaint is being managed by a different agency [....]

Chapter 7: Renovating Your House For The Future

This is the 7th entry in my upcoming book “50 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Earlier”. If you’ve done home renovations before, you know how painful the whole process is. This article applies to renovation of small apartments and doing proper future-proofing, I’m afraid I’m too poor to tell you how to renovate a bungalow right

Chapter 6: The Wedding Survival Guide

This is the 6th chapter in my upcoming book “50 Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me Earlier”. The previous chapters were getting a bit too serious, so here’s something less philosophical, but no less important. The photo above is that of our wedding bands which I designed after watching too many episodes of Xena the Warrior Princess.

Whenever people [....]
